As people involved with Ménière’s realise, there is still much to be learned to fully understand the causes of the disorder, and to provide effective treatments and preventative measures.

The Ménière’s Support Group of NSW has taken positive and significant action to improve our knowledge and treatment of Ménière’s by establishing the Ménière’s Research Fund.

The Ménière’s Research Fund aims to raise money for research into the cause, treatment, and ultimately, a cure for Ménière’s disease. We are working to give Ménière’s sufferers hope, and to lessen their physical and psychological distress.

The Ménière’s Research Fund has been established within the Medical Foundation of the University of Sydney with the aim of raising enough money, firstly to finance a Research Fellow and secondly, to become a self-funding Research Foundation, which could then finance several ongoing research projects.

Only research projects with significant merit will be considered for funding by the Ménière’s Research Fund. Grants are only awarded following careful peer review (that is, evaluation of the project by other experts in the field) and are subject to monitoring of research outcomes against the original aims and objectives.

It is expected that the researcher, by applying for grants and sponsorship by corporations and philanthropic organisations, will be able to double the funds granted for a particular research project by the Ménière’s Research Fund. This will result in a very efficient use of direct donations.

We are confident that the establishment of the Ménière’s Research Fund will lead to significant progress in our understanding of Ménière’s disease and we expect that there will be practical outcomes that will benefit Ménière’s sufferers.
